Until 1930, despite having town status, it was called Aldeia Galega do Ribatejo or simply Aldeia Galega or Aldegalega, thereafter adopting its present name, «which better reflects its historical traditions.
It is the seat of the Municipality of Montijo, with an area of 348,62 km² and 55 689 inhabitants (2021), divided into five civil parishes. It is one of the few territorially discontinuous municipalities in Portugal and the clearest example of this. The main section, containing the city that is the municipal seat, is the smaller one (56,3 km²) and is bordered to the north and east by the municipality of Alcochete, to the south-east by Palmela, to the south by Moita and to the west by the Tagus estuary.
The secondary section, around 15 km to the east, is bordered to the north by Coruche, to the east by Montemor-o-Novo and Vendas Novas, to the south and south-west by Palmela and to the north-west by Benavente.
Ponte Vasco da Gama, opened in March 1998, and the Transtejo river service provide the link between Montijo and Lisbon. On 29 June, Montijo celebrates the Festas Populares de São Pedro, patron saint of seafarers, and is known as a land of bullfighting, good food and fado.
Montijo's history is closely linked to the River Tagus, which borders much of its geographical area. Human presence was felt in the region from a very early period (at least since the Palaeolithic, according to archaeological remains found), most probably because of the excellent natural conditions.
